About
Us |
As educators, we are always reading to
keep up with
current research and educational innovations. Virtual
Booktalks is owned and operated by Math Journeys. It is an online community
where teachers from Virginia exchange ideas as they read books
about teaching and learning mathematics. Online groups are
created for teachers reading titles on our reading list who plan to
collaborate with other teachers to earn
recertification points toward the renewal of their Virginia
Teaching License. Teachers must
obtain approval for this staff development activity from their staff
development coordinator or a designee prior to enrolling in a book
talk.
As teachers respond to the discussion prompts and complete tasks for each chapter of a book, they think through the benefits and challenges of implementation. At the end of the book talk, their reflections and tasks are used to create a plan that becomes a tool for putting theory into practice. School divisions and school administrators can enroll a group of math teachers, math coaches, or administrators in a virtual book talk and request a private online learning team (you must provide the books for your teachers). Our team can design a booktalk with your schedule in mind using any title listed in on the Private Booktalks tab of the Virtual Booktalks Website. Additional features of a private booktalk include: |

Several
book talks are held each year. We choose the reading list and
teachers, math coaches & specialists, and other interested
educators can sign up to join a book talk that includes teachers from
around the state of Virginia. The cost is $40 for each person (teachers purchase the
books on their own). A certificate that awards 25
recertification points is given to each participant upon completion of
assignments.
