Word Problems
  • Word problems should not be extra. Consider assigning only the 3-5 word problems at the end of the computation practice in the textbook.
  • Give students the assignment of drawing a picture for one or two of the word problems you assign.
  • Have students create word problems in class. (Student pairs or groups of 3)
  • Give students a theme or topic.  Provide a chart, price list or other form of data to get them started.
  • Teach with word problems or math stories.  This helps students relate math to real life.
  • Act It Out~ give student problems that require them to get physically involved.
