What is Number Sense?  Click Here
  • It is necessary to develop NUMBER SENSE in students.
  • The following site provides an explanation of number sense
  • This site offers several examples of problems that require number sense.  Click your grade level.  Determine if you think your students should be able to solve the problems.  Then decide if you think they can.  The next step is to think about what you can do to build number sense in your students.  What math concepts do students need to understand to be able to solve the problems?
Teaching Math Patterns Help Develop Number Sense:
  • When doubling you are multiplying by 2
  • Dividing by 2 is the same as breaking in half
  • You can have half of an odd number
  • Plus 10
  • An Hour Later
  • Adding 9  (Relating it to 10)
  • Subtracting 9  (Relating it to 10)
Number Sense Activities
... require students to think and estimate and work with what they know about how numbers relate to one another and how they fit together.  The shopping spree and power lines games are examples.

Power Lines 2 - Mathematical reasoning level 2
